Since 1998, use of the internet in Britain has grown explosively, from 9% to 57% of households connected in 2006 (Office for National Statistics, Households with access to the internet, Great Britain, 23 August 2006), against a background of a prosperous economy, a strong education system, a world-class regulatory environment and competitive markets. A historical perspective will label this growth of the internet one of the great sociological changes of the last 50 years.
