13. We further recommend that the Government examine as a matter of urgency the effectiveness of the Information Commissioner's Office in enforcing good standards of data protection across the business community. As noted above, the Government believes that the current enforcement regime for data protection is fit for purpose. The Ministry of Justice has regular contact with the Office of the Information Commissioner and the powers available to the Commissioner are discussed regularly in that context. The effectiveness of the enforcement regime is covered in the annual report that the Commissioner is required to make to the Government.
